Why Mineral Sunscreen matters

If you’ve been my client for a long time, you know I’ve been talking about chemical vs. mineral (physical) SPF for over a decade now. Sunscreen quality matters, and here’s why:

Chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate) work by penetrating into the skin and absorbing rays from the sun. Along the way, they cause their own damage to the skin’s DNA, and they enter your bloodstream within minutes. They are known endocrine disruptors, and are harmful to normal reproductive systems and development. These chemicals have been found in breast milk, affecting normal development of infants. This FDA Report indicates many of these chemicals contain photo reactive agents and increase photo sensitivity; meaning that by applying these chemicals to your body while exposed to the sun actually heightens the body’s reactivity to UV radiation and increases the risk of skin cancer. Crazy, right?! If that’s not horrifying enough, they are simply harmful to the health of the skin, contributing to issues you’re probably trying to prevent by wearing it, like hyper pigmentation ‘age spots”, “broken” capillaries, sensitization, clogged pores and dryness.

In my opinion, you are better off with the damage caused from UV exposure than the cascading health deteriorating effects of applying chemical sunscreens to your skin!

Don’t trust me? The FDA finally proposed new regulations to ensure sunscreens are safe. And we must remember we are part of a vast ecosystem, chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone and octinoxate are known to cause major damage to coral reefs and have been banned in Hawaii and Florida. When I traveled to Tulum, Mexico in 2012, the snorkeling tour I went on insisted on biodegradable mineral SPF.

Consider swapping out your chemical sunscreen for a mineral-based option such as zinc oxide. In my personal life and professional practice, I exclusively use and carry non-nano zinc, because there have been some links to respiratory issues with mineral SPF’s that use nano-particles. Companies are now responding to consumer concerns and advertising lots of mineral options to choose from. Remember to always read ingredient labels, because the front of a package is often misleading. There are many being advertised as “natural and mineral”, but still also contain chemical SPF’s, photo-sensitizing synthetic fragrance, or comedogenic (pore-clogging) ingredients.

Contrary to what many in the holistic beauty industry are doing, it’s not my style to constantly spread messages of fear and toxins in your beauty products, but this is a topic that is creating a lot of confusion I felt I needed to respond to. It should go without saying this is a top priority for me when choosing the products I recommend to you as a Holistic Esthetician. It also needs to be said that sunburns and skin cancer isn’t just caused by UV exposure. It has to do with our body’s ability to detox, our overall immune health, our antioxidant storage, awareness of peak sun times and your body’s own unique tolerance. That’s a whole other conversation, but I do encourage you to listen to your body and be open to the idea that staying healthy will never be about avoiding one thing, or using one product.

Consider this an invitation to engage more consciously with your beautiful body and this beautiful earth.

I have several cosmetically elegant, safe, zinc SPF formulations. Please reach out to me and we’ll find one you’ll love!
